How It Works

Raise the Roof acquires access to defaulted second lien mortgages from banks and lenders through several possible mechanisms depending on various dynamics of the participating lender partner.

Raise the Roof then offers interested homeowners the opportunity to have their second mortgage debt forgiven in exchange for performing community service in association with the HandsOn Network affiliate in their area.

The volunteer-focused arm of Points of Light Institute, HandsOn Network is the nation's largest volunteer network. It includes more than 250 HandsOn Action Centers in 16 countries and more than 70,000 corporate, faith and nonprofit organizations engaged in community change, and annually delivers approximately 30 million hours of volunteer service valued at $600 million.

When homeowners agree to participate, Raise the Roof connects them with their local HandsOn Network affiliate. The local affiliate conducts their volunteer intake and orientation sessions, coordinates their community service project(s), tracks their volunteer hours and reports their volunteer hours to Raise the Roof. Our program requires a minimum of 100 hours of community service regardless of the amount of debt. For loans in excess of $100,000, we require one (1) hour of service for each thousand dollars ($1,000) of debt.

Once homeowners complete their volunteer service commitments, their debt is forgiven and all three credit bureaus are notified that they are free and clear of their second mortgage debt.
